    How are riparian plants distributed along the riverbank topographic gradient in Mediterranean rivers? Application to minimally altered river stretches in Southern Spain.

    Species structure and composition in Mediterranean riparian forests are determined by hydrological features, longitudinal zonation, and riverbank topography. This study assesses the distribution of four native riparian plants along the riverbank topographic gradient in three river stretches in southern Spain, with special emphasis on the occupation of adult and young feet of each species. The studied stretches suffered minimal human disturbances, displayed semi-arid conditions, and had wide riparian areas to allow the development of the target species: black alder (Alnus glutinosa), salvia leaf willow (Salix salviifolia), narrow-leafed ash (Fraxinus angustifolia), and oleander (Nerium oleander). Thalweg height was used to define the riverbank topographic gradient. The results showed a preferential zone for black alder and salvia leaf willow in the range of 0-150 cm from the channel thalweg, with adult alders and willows being more common between 51 and 150 cm and young alders being more common under 50 cm. Conversely, narrow-leafed ash and oleander were much more frequent, and showed greater development, in the ranges of 151-200 cm and 201-250 cm, respectively, whereas the young feet of both species covered the entire topographic range. Adult feet of the four species were spatially segregated along the riverbank topographic gradient, indicating their differential ability to cope with water stress from the non-tolerant alders and willows to more tolerant narrow-leafed ash trees and oleanders. Young feet, however, showed a strategy more closely linked to the initial availability of colonisation sites within riparian areas to the dispersion strategy of each species and to the distribution of adult feet. In Mediterranean areas, where riparian management has traditionally faced great challenges, the incorporation of species preferences along riverbank gradients could improve the performance of restoration projects

    Dynamical Systems approach to Saffman-Taylor fingering. A Dynamical Solvability Scenario

    A dynamical systems approach to competition of Saffman-Taylor fingers in a channel is developed. This is based on the global study of the phase space structure of the low-dimensional ODE's defined by the classes of exact solutions of the problem without surface tension. Some simple examples are studied in detail, and general proofs concerning properties of fixed points and existence of finite-time singularities for broad classes of solutions are given. The existence of a continuum of multifinger fixed points and its dynamical implications are discussed. The main conclusion is that exact zero-surface tension solutions taken in a global sense as families of trajectories in phase space spanning a sufficiently large set of initial conditions, are unphysical because the multifinger fixed points are nonhyperbolic, and an unfolding of them does not exist within the same class of solutions. Hyperbolicity (saddle-point structure) of the multifinger fixed points is argued to be essential to the physically correct qualitative description of finger competition. The restoring of hyperbolicity by surface tension is discussed as the key point for a generic Dynamical Solvability Scenario which is proposed for a general context of interfacial pattern selection.Comment: 3 figures added, major rewriting of some sections, submitted to Phys.     Arrested dynamics of the dipolar hard-sphere model

    We report the combined results of molecular dynamics simulations and theoretical calculations concerning various dynamical arrest transitions in a model system representing a dipolar fluid, namely, N (softcore) rigid spheres interacting through a truncated dipole-dipole potential. By exploring different regimes of concentration and temperature, we find three distinct scenarios for the slowing down of the dynamics of the translational and orientational degrees of freedom: At low ({η\eta} = 0.2) and intermediate (η{\eta} = 0.4) volume fractions, both dynamics are strongly coupled and become simultaneously arrested upon cooling. At high concentrations ({η\eta} <\lt 0.6), the translational dynamics shows the features of an ordinary glass transition, either by compressing or cooling down the system, but with the orientations remaining ergodic, thus indicating the existence of partially arrested states. In this density regime, but at lower temperatures, the relaxation of the orientational dynamics also freezes. The physical scenario provided by the simulations is discussed and compared against results obtained with the self-consistent generalized Langevin equation theory, and both provide a consistent description of the dynamical arrest transitions in the system. Our results are summarized in an arrested states diagram which qualitatively organizes the simulation data and provides a generic picture of the glass transitions of a dipolar fluid

    Interface dynamics in Hele-Shaw flows with centrifugal forces. Preventing cusp singularities with rotation

    A class of exact solutions of Hele-Shaw flows without surface tension in a rotating cell is reported. We show that the interplay between injection and rotation modifies drastically the scenario of formation of finite-time cusp singularities. For a subclass of solutions, we show that, for any given initial condition, there exists a critical rotation rate above which cusp formation is prevented. We also find an exact sufficient condition to avoid cusps simultaneously for all initial conditions. This condition admits a simple interpretation related to the linear stability problem.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

    Two-finger selection theory in the Saffman-Taylor problem

    We find that solvability theory selects a set of stationary solutions of the Saffman-Taylor problem with coexistence of two \it unequal \rm fingers advancing with the same velocity but with different relative widths λ1\lambda_1 and λ2\lambda_2 and different tip positions. For vanishingly small dimensionless surface tension d0d_0, an infinite discrete set of values of the total filling fraction λ=λ1+λ2\lambda = \lambda_1 + \lambda_2 and of the relative individual finger width p=λ1/λ2p=\lambda_1/\lambda_2 are selected out of a two-parameter continuous degeneracy. They scale as λ1/2d02/3\lambda-1/2 \sim d_0^{2/3} and p1/2d01/3|p-1/2| \sim d_0^{1/3}. The selected values of λ\lambda differ from those of the single finger case.     The Involvement of Glutamate Metabolism in the Resistance to Thermal, Nutritional, and Oxidative Stress in Trypanosoma cruzi

    The inhibition of some glutamate metabolic pathways could lead to diminished parasite survival. In this study, the effects of L-methionine sulfoximine (MS), DL-methionine sulfone (MSO), and DL-methionine sulfoxide (MSE), three glutamate analogs, on several biological processes were evaluated. We found that these analogs inhibited the growth of epimastigotes cells and showed a synergistic effect with stress conditions such as temperature, nutritional starvation, and oxidative stress. The specific activity for the reductive amination of α-ketoglutaric acid, catalyzed by the NADP+-linked glutamate dehydrogenase, showed an increase in the NADP+ levels, when MS, MSE, and MSO were added. It suggests an eventual conversion of the compounds tested by the T. cruzi cells. The fact that trypomastigote bursting was not significantly inhibited when infected cells were treated with these compounds, remarks the existence of relevant metabolic differences among the different life-cycle stages. It must be considered when proposing a new therapeutic drug

    Analytical approach to viscous fingering in a cylindrical Hele-Shaw cell

    We report analytical results for the development of the viscous fingering instability in a cylindrical Hele-Shaw cell of radius a and thickness b. We derive a generalized version of Darcy's law in such cylindrical background, and find it recovers the usual Darcy's law for flow in flat, rectangular cells, with corrections of higher order in b/a. We focus our interest on the influence of cell's radius of curvature on the instability characteristics. Linear and slightly nonlinear flow regimes are studied through a mode-coupling analysis. Our analytical results reveal that linear growth rates and finger competition are inhibited for increasingly larger radius of curvature.     Press media impact of the Cumbre Vieja volcano activity in the island of La Palma (Canary Islands): A machine learning and sentiment analysis of the news published during the volcanic eruption of 2021

    In this work we have used as a source of information a large sample of the press articles published during 2021 about the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano in the island of La Palma (Canary Islands). In contraposition, the scientific papers evaluating different facets of natural disasters have preferentially used social networks as a source of information. Herein we have shown how the emotions and sentiments expressed in press media can be efficiently analyzed via AI techniques to better assess the social impact of a disaster at the time it takes place. We have also gauged the usefulness of different classifiers combining sentiment analysis with multivariate statistical analysis and machine learning techniques. By applying this methodology, we were able to classify a newspaper article within a certain time frame of the eruption, and we observed significant differences between local news published in Spanish and those of foreign newspapers written in English. We also found different emotional trajectories of articles by applying the Fourier transform onto the inner “valence” progress along each article narrative time. In addition, there appeared a significant relationship between the surface area occupied by lava and the emotions and sentiments expressed in the articles—many other correlations and causalities could be explored too. The main findings of this research may constitute a helpful resource for a better understanding of the way press media react to volcanic activity, and may guide in public decisionmaking under different temporal horizons, including the design of improved strategies in the risk reduction domain

    Topological gravity on plumbed V-cobordisms

    An ensemble of cosmological models based on generalized BF-theory is constructed where the role of vacuum (zero-level) coupling constants is played by topologically invariant rational intersection forms (cosmological-constant matrices) of 4-dimensional plumbed V-cobordisms which are interpreted as Euclidean spacetime regions. For these regions describing topology changes, the rational and integer intersection matrices are calculated. A relation is found between the hierarchy of certain elements of these matrices and the hierarchy of coupling constants of the universal (low-energy) interactions.
